What The Erik Karlsson Trade Really Means For The Penguins

Updated: Aug 8, 2023

The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired Erik Karlsson yesterday, or on Sunday, August 6 (whenever you are reading this), in a blockbuster three-team trade. This deal had been in the works for a few weeks. The deal included the Pittsburgh Penguins receiving Erik Karlsson (with 13.04% of his salary retained), Rem Pitlick, Dillon Hamaliuk, and a 2026 third-round draft pick from San Jose. The San Jose Sharks received a 2024 first-round pick (top-10 protected from Pittsburgh), Mikael Granlund, Jan Ruuta, and Mike Hoffman. The third team involved was the Montreal Canadiens, who received a 2025 second-round draft pick (from Pittsburgh), Jeff Petry (with 25% of his salary retained), Casey DeSmith, and Nathan Legare. It was a massive trade involving 12 assets, and the Penguins finally got the player they wanted in Erik Karlsson while also saving $3.1 million in cap space. This is a remarkable achievement since acquiring a player like Karlsson while saving money is an exceptional feat.

With the addition of Karlsson, the Penguins now have two future Hall-of-Fame, puck-moving, right-handed defensemen in their lineup. Having one such player is good, but having two will be incredible for their offence. A recurring question being asked is how they can utilize both Karlsson and Letang over 60 minutes per game effectively. With both of them on the ice for 66 percent of the time, the team is expected to score more goals. Last year, the Penguins ranked 16th in the NHL in goals scored, and losing Kris Letang certainly did not help. However, with Karlsson and Letang together, the team's scoring capabilities should significantly improve. Last year, the Penguins' bottom-six scoring was poor, which put the team at a disadvantage. However, by adding Erik Karlsson to the ice with these players, they can find ways to score effectively.

What about the special teams? the powerplay was average and inconsistent last year, despite having the second-most powerplay opportunities in the NHL. With the inclusion of Karlsson in the powerplay lineup alongside Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jake Guentzel, and Kris Letang, the Penguins' powerplay could potentially finish in the top 7 in the league. Also, with an empty net, the Penguins can put out Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jake Guentzel, Kris Letang, Eric Karlsson, and either Rickard Rackell, Bryan Rust, or Rielly Smith. They have plenty of options to use in these situations.

Now let’s talk about the penalty kill. The Penguin’s penalty kill finished 16 in the league, also the Penguins only had 5 short-handed goals last year, which ranked 26 in the league, a whole bunch of average last year. Now, let's explore a scenario where the Penguins find themselves trailing 4-3 with just 5 minutes left in the game, and they are shorthanded. In such a crucial moment, the need for a short-handed goal becomes even more vital. With the addition of Erik Karlsson and his exceptional offensive skills, along with Kris Letang's proficiency in contributing offensively from the blue line, the Penguins now have a formidable duo to deploy during the penalty kill. To further boost their chances of scoring, they can also include Reilly Smith, who alone recorded 5 short-handed goals last year. Of course, it won't be practical to put Karlsson on the penalty kill all the time, as he is a valuable asset in various other situations during the game. However, when the team desperately needs a goal, having Karlsson and Letang on the ice together wouldn’t mean the game is completely over.

The acquisition of Erik Karlsson by the Pittsburgh Penguins brings a plethora of benefits to the team, transcending mere scoring prowess. His impact extends to various facets of the game, elevating the Penguins' performance in every aspect. As a dynamic puck-moving defenseman, Karlsson's offensive abilities add a new dimension to the team's playmaking and scoring potential. His exceptional vision and passing skills create numerous opportunities for his teammates to find the back of the net, while his lethal shot from the blue line strengthens their powerplay. Karlsson's presence also provides vital relief to Kris Letang, a veteran defenseman who has shouldered the defensive burden for over a decade. With Karlsson's assistance, the new penguin's defensive core forms a formidable partnership that can thwart opponents' attacks and initiate smooth transitions from defence to offence. Beyond his on-ice contributions, Karlsson's leadership qualities and experience bring invaluable intangibles to the Penguins' locker room. As a three-time Norris Trophy winner, he commands respect and admiration from teammates, making him an inspirational figure for younger players to learn from (Pierre-Oliver Joseph and Ty Smith). His mentorship and guidance can foster a culture of growth and development within the organization, propelling the Penguins to greater heights.

In conclusion, the trade for Erik Karlsson represents a strategic and transformative move for the Pittsburgh Penguins. His multifaceted impact on scoring, playmaking, defensive support, and leadership qualities have the potential to propel the team to a new level of competitiveness in the NHL. That is what the Erik Karlsson trade really means for the Penguins in an in-depth thought.
